Turning On Your Camera and Microphone for a Video Meeting

The short version
The first time you join a TriLuna video meeting, your browser asks: "triluna.app wants to use your camera and microphone." Click Allow. If you clicked Block by mistake, or nothing happens, follow the steps for your device below. The join page now shows these steps too, and lets your host know you need a hand.

Before you start

  • Use a regular browser. Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox all work. If you tapped the meeting link inside Facebook, Gmail, LinkedIn or another app, open it in your browser instead: tap the ⋯ or share menu and choose Open in browser.
  • Close other video apps. Zoom, Teams, FaceTime and Skype can hold on to the camera or microphone, and then the browser can’t use it.
  • Check the hardware. Make sure the camera cover is open and any headset is plugged in before you open the meeting link.

What the join page tells you

If your camera or microphone doesn’t turn on, the join page now says why and shows the steps for your browser and computer:

What you seeWhat it means
Your browser is blocking the camera/microphone for this pageThe website setting is “Block”. Fix it in the browser (below).
Your computer is blocking Chrome (or Edge, Safari…) from using the camera/microphoneThe browser setting is fine, but your Mac or Windows privacy settings block the whole browser. Fix it in System Settings (below).
The camera/microphone is busy or switched offAnother app is using it, or (on Windows) the privacy switch is off.
We couldn’t find a camera/microphoneNothing is plugged in, or the device you picked last time is gone.

When you’ve changed the setting, click I’ve changed it — try again. You can always join to watch and listen in the meantime. Your host gets a notice that your camera or microphone is having trouble, so they can help.

Fix it in your browser

Chrome or Edge (Windows, Mac, Chromebook)

  1. Look at the address bar at the top of the window. Click the icon just to the left of triluna.app. It looks like two little sliders or a padlock.
  2. Switch Camera and Microphone to Allow, or click Reset permission.
  3. Reload the page. Chrome and Edge only use the new setting after a reload. They show a bar under the address bar saying “Reload this page to apply your updated settings”, so click its blue Reload button, or the Reload page button on the join screen. If you were already in the meeting, press Join again after the reload.
  4. If the browser asks, click Allow.

Safari (Mac)

  1. In the menu bar at the very top of the screen, click Safari → Settings for triluna.app…
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  3. Reload the page.

Firefox

  1. Click the crossed-out camera or microphone icon on the left of the address bar.
  2. Click the × next to “Blocked” to clear it.
  3. Reload the page. When Firefox asks, click Allow.

iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap AA at the left of the address bar.
  2. Tap Website Settings.
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload.
  4. Still blocked? Open the Settings app → Safari → Camera / Microphone → Ask or Allow.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Tap the icon on the left of the address bar.
  2. Tap Permissions and turn on Camera and Microphone.
  3. Still blocked? Open Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions and allow both.

Fix it in your computer’s settings

If the browser says Allow but it still doesn’t work, your computer may be blocking the browser itself. This is very common on Macs.

Shortcut: when this happens, the join page shows an Open Mac camera settings (or Open Windows camera settings) button that goes straight to the right page. Your browser will ask whether to open System Settings, so click Open. Then turn on the switch next to your browser, as in the steps below.

Mac

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner → System Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & Security in the left column.
  3. Click Camera, then turn on the switch next to your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox…). Do the same under Microphone.
  4. Your Mac will ask you to Quit & Reopen the browser. Click it, then open the meeting link again.

Windows 10 / 11

  1. Click Start → Settings → Privacy & security.
  2. Click Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera.
  3. Go back, click Microphone, and turn on the same two switches.
  4. Close and reopen your browser, then open the meeting link again.

Blur your background

You can blur everything behind you so other people in the meeting only see you clearly.

  • Before you join: tick Blur my background under the camera preview. The preview shows exactly what others will see.
  • During the meeting: click Blur at the top of the screen. Click it again to turn it off.

Your browser remembers the setting, so it’s on next time you join from the same browser. The blur happens on your own computer before your video is sent, so nobody else in the meeting sees your real background.

Good to know:

  • Blur uses some of your computer’s processing power. If your video gets choppy or your laptop runs warm, turn it off.
  • It works best with good lighting and a plain wall behind you. Edges around hair and hands can look soft.
  • If you don’t see the option, your browser can’t run it. Try the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  • In the TriLuna iPhone app, blur isn’t available yet.

Still stuck?

  • Try another device. A phone or tablet with Safari or Chrome usually works straight away.
  • Join by phone for audio. If your group also has a phone line, you can call in for sound and keep the video page open to watch.
  • Ask your host. They can see that your camera or microphone isn’t working, and roughly why, while the meeting is running.
