Transcribe a Recording

What this guide covers
Uploading an audio or video recording on the Transcription page, how long it takes, and what the page tells you while you wait.

Upload a recording

  1. Open Transcription from your dashboard.
  2. Drop an audio or video file on the upload box, or click it to choose one. Files up to 1 GB are accepted, including MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV and most other common formats.
  3. Choose your options:
    • Separate speakers labels who said what. Leave it on for meetings and interviews.
    • Speakers (optional): if you know how many people speak, entering it helps separate them.
    • Language: Detect automatically is right almost every time.
  4. Click Transcribe.

Your recording is transcribed on TriLuna’s own servers; it is never sent to an outside provider. You can have up to three recordings in progress at once.

How long it takes

Recordings are transcribed one at a time, on the same engine that also re-transcribes calls and meetings. So there are two parts to the wait:

  • Waiting: while another job is running, yours waits its turn. The page says what’s ahead and roughly how long, for example “Waiting — about 40 minutes before yours starts (a 63-min meeting transcription is running)”. If that job is running longer than expected, the page says so, and yours starts as soon as it finishes.
  • Transcribing: once yours starts, the page counts down the time left, for example “Transcribing — about 12 minutes left”. With Separate speakers on, expect a little longer than the recording itself (an hour of audio takes about 70 minutes). Without it, about 40 minutes per hour of audio.

In your list of transcriptions, each one shows waiting or transcribing so you can tell them apart at a glance. Estimates are estimates: a long, busy recording can take longer, and the page says so rather than showing zero.

You can close the page at any time. The transcription keeps going, and a server restart won’t lose it.

When it’s done

Open the transcription to read it, play back the audio, or download the transcript. Your uploaded audio is kept for 30 days; the transcript is kept until you delete it. Delete removes both the transcript and the audio.

If you don’t see Transcription on your dashboard, it isn’t enabled on your account yet. Reach out to your account contact at TriLuna.
